Key Dates and Deadlines

The following outlines the deadlines for voter registration to be eligible to vote. Registration applications can be submitted in person, by mail or online. Deadlines vary based on application method and type of election. Visit Elections Coming Up for more specific deadline dates.

  • Mailed In Application and Online Voter Registration Deadlines
    • General Election: post-marked eighteen days before the election
    • Primary: post-marked eighteen days before the primary
    • Referendum: the day before referendum
  • In-Person – Application Delivered by the voter to the Registrar or Town Clerk
    • General Election: 8:00 p.m. eighteen days prior to Early Voting
    • Primary: 12:00 noon the day before the Early Voting primary

New voter registration applications (who do not qualify for one of the exceptions below) received after the deadlines will be processed after the election. (This does not apply to party changes. For more information on party enrollment change deadlines, see below.) Voting privileges become effective once written approval is sent to the voter, no earlier than two days after the election.

NOTE: Registration deadlines apply to Early Voting as well as voting on the day of the election or primary.

NOTE: You are not registered until you receive written confirmation from the Redding Office of the Registrar of Voters.

EXCEPTIONS to the deadlines outlined above are:

  • If you moved to Redding after the registration deadline but before election day
  • If you turned 18 years of age after the registration deadline but before election day
  • If you became a U.S. citizen after the registration deadline but before election day
  • If you are a member of the armed forces and a former member of the armed forces discharged within the calendar year

If you believe you qualify for one of these exceptions, contact the ROV office ASAP at 203-938-5012 or registrar@townofreddingct.org.

If you qualify for an exception, you may register to vote:

  • General Election: by 5:00 p.m. the day before the election
  • Early Voting for General Election: by 12:00 p.m. the day before you wish to vote early
  • Primary Election: by 12:00 p.m. (noon) the day before primary
  • Early Voting for a Primary Election: by 12:00 p.m. the day before you wish to vote early
  • Referendum: by the close of business the day before referendum
    • No person admitted as an elector on the day of the referendum shall be entitled to vote in that referendum as a registered voter
    • Early Voting is not available
  • Caucus or Convention: by the day before caucus or convention

Same Day Registration
If you miss the registration deadlines outlined above, Same Day Registration (SDR) is available during Early Voting and on Election Day (for regular elections only). To learn more, visit Same Day Registration.

Deadlines for Changing Party Enrollment
Connecticut is a closed primary state. This means you must be a registered voter in the party for which the primary is being held. In other words, you must be a registered Democrat to vote in a Democratic primary and you must be a registered Republican to vote in a Republican primary. To verify your registration and party, visit Voter Registration Lookup.

  • If you are a registered Democrat and wish to change your registration to Republican so you can vote in the Republican primary, the deadline to change your party affiliation is 3 months before the primary.
  • If you are a registered Republican and wish to change your registration to Democrat so you can vote in the Democratic primary, the deadline to change your party affiliation is 3 months before the primary.
  • If you are NOT registered in any political party (known as Unaffiliated), you must change your registration to Democrat or Republican in person by the day before the primary.
    • If you are an Unaffiliated voter and wish to change your party affiliation to Democrat or Republican so you can vote in a primary during Early Voting, you must do so in person by 12:00 pm (noon) the previous business day. Visit Early Voting or Elections Coming Up for more information.
