In June of 2015, the Town of Redding launched a new website with a number of new features to connect residents with town news and the workings of local boards and commissions. Residents can now sign up to receive email notifications for each meeting of a Board or Commission that is of interest. Meeting Minutes are now linked to Agendas, and searchable by board and date range, so that residents can more easily access them.
Below is more information about how the email alerting system works.
1. Background
The new Town of Redding website is built in WordPress. During development, we sought to create a better solution to inform residents of the activities of town boards, commissions and news alerts. The system we developed sends email alerts to those who have opted in to specific categories. The system is designed to broadcast an email a few minutes after certain content is published on the website.
Specifically, the system will send an email under the following conditions:
- When a Special Town Meeting is noticed. This type of meeting involves a vote.
- When any of the town’s board, commissions, task forces or committees posts an agenda
- When important announcements are made (such as informational meetings, town news, referendums, etc.)
- When an alert is necessary (such as a road closing, power outage, or other safety related news)
2. Subscribing
By using the signup form here, residents can choose to opt into any of 22+ categories of information that will be emailed periodically. Here is how to signup:
- Enter your email address, first and last name, and check off the categories you are interested in.
- Click the SUBSCRIBE button at the bottom.
- Scroll up the page slightly to see the following message:
- Now check your email account for an email containing a confirmation link that looks like this:
- After clicking the link in the email, your browser will go to a web page and display the following message:
- You are now opted in for the categories you chose.
- NOTE: To avoid alerts going into your spam folder, add info
@townofreddingct.org to your email address book.
3. Adding More Categories
If your email address is already in the system and you would like to receive email alerts for additional categories, do the following:
- Enter your email address, and first and last name, and choose the additional categories you are interested in.
- Click the SUBSCRIBE button at the bottom.
- Scroll up the page slightly to see the following message:
- Ignore this alert; you have now added the new categories and will begin receiving alerts for them.
Unsubscribing
To unsubscribe from all categories of alerts, click here and submit your email address to be immediately unsubscribed.
To unsubscribe from a specific category only, click here and submit your information along with the categories you wish to be unsubscribed for and we will take care of it manually.
