COMMISSION ON AGING
MEETING MINUTES
WEDNESDAY, September 6, 2017
REDDING TOWN HALL

Commission members present:
Ingrid Heller & Karen de Friesse – Co-Chair, Hilda Rhodes, Janet Metzger, Lea Mintz, Jean Rexford, Jean Whitham and Mary Dale Lancaster
Angelica Fontanez – Director of Social Services
Guests: Anita Taylor, Meadow Ridge

The meeting was called to order at 9:00 a.m.

I. Approval of Minutes from July 2017
Motion: Minutes approved as recorded July 2017 – unanimous.

II. Senior Center Program Report – Ruth Moran, absent
Activity sheet distributed by Angelica and a brief discussion ensued. Annette is leaving the center September 11 as full time but will continue to work part time until a replacement is found.

III. Director’s Report – Angelica Fontanez
Angelica gave a brief overview of the services provided noting an uptick in food pantry visits and oil requests. Angelica’s talk focused on the difficulty in getting applications processed for oil assistance, Medicare and Medicaid. She reported about how having additional monies from the United Way, “Redding Shares the Warmth” and various other charities helping families in need bridge the gap from self-sustained to government assisted.
Angelica also mentioned that the Channel 12 news story helped to fill the food pantry along with fresh vegetables from local gardens. There was also a Boys and Girls Club donation raised and put in Salvation Army shoe gift cards.

IV. Commissioner’s Report
Nothing at this time.

V. New Business
Mary Dale brought up the possibility of creating neighborhood within Redding and Jean R. suggested a general theme for the year, “Good Neighbors”. Karen asked for ideas to be presented at the next meeting with perhaps an outreach reception to the community.

There was no additional business presented before the Commission; the meeting was adjourned at 10:00 am.

The next COA meeting is scheduled for October 4, 2017 at 9:00 a.m. at Heritage Center.
