MEETING MINUTES
WEDNESDAY, October 4, 2017
REDDING COMMUNITY CENTER

Commission members present:

The meeting was called to order at 9:03 a.m.

I. Approval of Minutes from September 2017
Motion: Minutes approved as recorded September 2017 – unanimous.

II. Senior Center Program Report – Ruth Moran
Activity/financial sheet was distributed by Ruth, a brief discussion ensued. Ruth explained that numbers were down for September due to the book fair. The Reiki talk on 9/12 was successful, participants enjoyed the event. The senior trip to Philadelphia has 10 seats already filled, slots are still open. Interviews are continuing to take place to fill Annette’s position.

III. Special Presentation by Mary Dale Lancaster on ALICE
-ALICE (Asset Limited, Income Constrained, Employed) is a program through the United Way.
-Mary explained that this program is aimed to help seniors who are working, living paycheck to paycheck, and are considered to be “caught in the middle”. These seniors don’t qualify for any assistance but are barely making ends meet.
-In Redding, 19% of seniors fall within the guidelines. ALICE program could serve many seniors in Redding that are in need of assistance.
-Karen asked if Casey Levine would be able to come to a commission meeting and further explain the program and answer questions. Mary Dale Lancaster said she will set this up and agreed this would be valuable.
-Angelica furthered the discussion explaining a few of her senior clients who are the “near poor” and how a program such as ALICE would be beneficial to them.

IV. Director’s Report – Angelica Fontanez
Angelica gave a brief overview of services provided to clients for the month of September 2017. She explained that she is encouraging seniors to apply for help early. Angelica expressed frustration in the systems used for applications (computer issues, compatibility in software). She explained the system is difficult to navigate and frustrating. She is meeting with the Torch club to start various service projects. Two Girl Scout troops have volunteered to do service projects including helping with food pantry donations and doing visits to seniors.

V. Commissioner’s Report
Nothing at this time.

IV. New Business
-Anita from Meadow Ridge updated the commission on the completion of the Alzheimer’s project. Donations for the food pantry continue to come in at a steady rate.
-She expressed her frustrations in not being able to donate medical equipment that isn’t needed by her patients anymore. These reasons are often due to liability issues.
-Commission further discussed the “Good Neighbors” theme. Emphasis on bringing people, services, networks together in order to reach all neighbors.

There was no additional business presented before the Commission; the meeting was adjourned at 10:002 am.

The next COA meeting is scheduled for Wednesday, November 8, 2017 at 9:00 a.m. at Heritage Center.
