Minutes of Commission on Aging, 06/01/2016

AGENDA: Commission on Aging

RECEIVED 06/08/2016 8:52am
Michele R. Grande – Redding Town Clerk

June 1, 2016

Commission members: Beth Wagner, Janet Metzger, Rosalind Kopfstein, Lea Mintz, Ingrid Heller, Jean Whitham, Sam Crocker
Others present: Ruth Moran, Maria Jordan (MSW), Julia Pemberton (9:30 am)

Mrs. Wagner called the June 1 2016 meeting to order at 9:00 am in the Redding Community Center

Motion: move that the minutes of the meeting of May 4, 2016 be accepted as corrected. Metzger, Kopfstein. Approved. Unanimous.

Correction:  Janet Metzger’s name was listed twice in the attendance.

Angelica Fontanez was unable to be at the meeting, but she submitted a written report.  During the past month she has made presentations at the Mark Twain Library and at the Discussion Group. Both were well received. Ms. Fontanez also reported the Transportation Grant was approved for an increased amount, increasing from $12,000 to $23,275. The increase was because the Town met the criteria for a higher amount. Commission members congratulated Ms. Fontanez for her outreach and obtaining the higher amount of the Transportation Grant.

The Town car that is available for transportation of residents is not in good shape and cannot be used. Further research is being done to fill the void.

Mrs. Kopfstein reported that there is a Senior Housing Seminar on June 14, 2016, from 1 to 3 pm.  She will attend if Ms. Fontanez is not available to attend.

Van usage report:  143 trips in May, averaging 8.4/day with 1,784 miles or 105/day. Ms. Moran explained the difficulties of scheduling to accommodate all the requests. There was a discussion of the policies regarding van usage, wait times, etc. A transportation policy subcommittee will be formed that will include Angelica, Mike, Lea Mintz and Ingrid Heller.

Ruth Moran provided a written report on the average attendance at classes and no-fee events/classes. Attendance has dwindled, likely due to the time of year and conflicting activities. The John McLeran program will be scheduled.

Mrs. Moran is planning to offer a First Aid refresher course over the summer. The Aerobics Class, Let’s Get Movin, has been cancelled for the summer. Attendance has been low in that class.  The class will be started again in the fall. Mrs. Metzger suggested contacting all those who participated in the past to let them know the class will be revitalized in the fall. Tai Chi class has been meeting three times a week, with a modified fee schedule. Advance registration for three/week will have a reduced fee for the third session in the week.

There is interest in going to the 911 Memorial Center in NewYork City and four people have signed up for that with a Friendship Tours. This program was offered at the last minute and there was not sufficient time to advertise the program.

Lunch Program, the CW Resources will no longer be serving lunches on Wednesday, they are now offering lunch on Tuesday and Thursday.

The financials for programming was reviewed. The income/attendance for the exercise and art classes has been decreasing.

Mrs. Moran is working with the Garden Club to offer a Fine Quilt and Garden Show in September.

AED Training: This training will be offered at the end of the July meeting, and invite the Discussion Group, pending further confirmation of details.

Election of officers:  this is schedule for the July meeting. Both Beth and Janet have agreed to continue as Chairman and Vice Chairman.  Mrs. Moran indicated that Jean Wexford is interested in serving on the Commission.  Two additional alternate members are needed at this time. There may also be an opening for a full member. Mrs. Metzger suggested that other residents be solicited to join the Commission.

Front Desk Position: Ms. Fontanez and Mrs. Moran will be interviewing soon.

Mrs. Pemberton noted that as a result of State budget reductions, some services have been reduced. The CW Food Service is one example.

July 6, 2016, 9 am in the Senior Center.

The Chair adjourned the meeting at 9:52 a.m.
