MEETING MINUTES
WEDNESDAY, November 2, 2016
HERITAGE CENTER

Commission members present:
Beth Wagner – Chair, Karen de Friesse, Jean Whitham, Rosalind Kopfstein, Sam Crocker, Janet Metzger, Ingrid Heller, Hilda Rhodes, Lea Mintz, Janet Metzger.
Ruth Moran – Program Coordinator of Heritage Center
Guest: Anita Taylor, Director of Resident Experience – Meadow Ridge

The meeting was called to order at 9:05 a.m.

I. Approval of Minutes from October 5, 2016
Motion: Minutes approved as written – unanimous.
Metzger, Mintz.

II. Senior Center Program Report – Ruth Moran
Van schedule: 125 trips in October, 1421 miles averaging 89 miles @ day and 7-8 pickups four days a week.
Activities at the Heritage Center included a 100th Birthday Party, an upcoming 97th Birthday party and a Halloween party with a disc jockey with only 8 attendees.
Future programs will include a travelogue by the Bonfanti’s of their around the world trip, AARP driving course, and a wine for dummies program that needed to be rescheduled. The Mothers and Daughters National Charity League Holiday Party is scheduled for Thursday, December 8th at Noon, a $5.00 fee is charged for a wonderful lunch and entertainment by school students.

Some exercise programs are quite active while others have been cancelled due to low attendance. There are two distinct groups who come to the Heritage Center, 1: those who love educational programs and 2: those who enjoy the lunches and socialization. A discussion ensued about finding the right instructors and offering the appropriate program for the seniors with great instructors. Instructors are using recTrack – the database for attendance. The new clay class is also quite popular.
The Open Mike night for the writing group will be held on Wednesday – November 16th at the Center.

A motion was made to commend and compliment Ruth Moran on the outstanding work and multiple initiatives she has undertaken in enhancing and developing new programs at the Heritage Center. Mintz, Whitham – Unanimous.

III. Community Participation
Anita Taylor – Director of Resident Experience and Outreach from Meadow Ridge Continuing Care Retirement Community is hoping to sponsor a family for the holidays and is consulting with Angelica Fontanez to identify a family in need. Karen de Friesse, the Garden club chair, had an opportunity to view the farm and flower beds and reported they are bountiful and beautiful.

IV. Other Business:

A. Beth Wagner, Julia Pemberton and Angelica Fontanez had an initial meeting to review the budget proposal process, and to delineate specific requests for the Social Services and Heritage Center budgets.

B. 2017 Meeting dates for the Commission on Aging are:
January 4; February 1; March 1; April 5;
May 10 (2nd Wednesday); June 7; July 5; September 6 (at Town Hall)
October 4; November 1; December 6, 2017.

There was no additional business presented before the Commission; the meeting was adjourned at 9:52 am.

The next COA meeting is scheduled for December 7, 2016 at 9:00 a.m. in the
Heritage Center.
