Others: 4 members of the public

CALL TO ORDER
Chris Parkin called the Redding Board of Education Special meeting to order at 7:02 p.m.

PUBLIC COMMENT
Kristin Anstett, Whortleberry Road, Redding – she is concerned about comments made by members of the Board of Finance at the most recent meeting with respect to Special Education (a protected class of students), the costs of it, how it affects general education and the somewhat limited access she feels is ongoing for her children.  He daughter in 3rd grade has been denied accommodations for dyslexia and dysgraphia.  She would like to see the Board of Education support the needs of Special Education.

BOARD MEMBER COMMENT
Chirag Sadana noted that the requested cuts are short-sighted. The reduction of $100k could cost much more later.  The presented budget is below the rate of inflation and it is not fair to request the further reduction.

DISCUSSION
Board of Finance requested $100k cut to Board of Education 2022-2023 budget – discussion led by C. Parkin and Dr. McKinnon on recent changes to budget that resulted in the following reductions:

  • Network Administrator @$55,000
  • 1 year replacement savings @$20,462 (1 teacher taking 12 month LOA, long term sub will be at lower salary)
  • CT MERS Split @$10,000

The Board felt comfortable adopting the above changes.
Motion:  move that the Redding Board of Education adopt an operating budget for the 2022-2023 school year of $23,811,157.64. (Sadana, Oulton)  Approved.  Unanimous.

ADJOURNMENT
Motion: move that the Redding Board of Education Special meeting be adjourned. (Sadana, Gibbons).  Approved.  Unanimous.

The meeting was adjourned at 8:06 p.m.
